Notes From The Director......

Playwright Julian Wiles calls Fruitcakes “a celebration of small-town life”. It certainly is that. But there are deeper layers to the story than just the portrayal of interesting, eccentric, small-town characters. There is pain, struggle, and alienation. There is also love, acceptance, and reconciliation.

Throughout the light, entertaining, comical story of Fruitcakes, we see expressions of undeserved, unconditional love, and salvation, of sorts, from our own stubbornness and blindness. My own Christian faith and the Biblical Christmas story are precious to me. I agreed to direct this play, in part, because I see something of the real Christmas story reflected in the lives of the characters in Mc Cord’s Ferry.

Thank you for sharing this holiday celebration with us. We hope it will make your Christmas warmer and brighter. We, the cast and crew of Fruitcakes, and all of us at Patio Playhouse, wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Vicki Harvey - Betty Jane
Vicki was born in Alaska, but grew up in California.  She moved down to San Diego 8 years ago, and has loved it ever since.  Vicki first got involved with Patio Playhouse when her daughter appeared in Charlotte’s Web. When auditions for Fruitcakes came up, both of her children tried out, and convinced her to audition as well.  “It's been a great pleasure working with all these Fruitcakes!”

Caro Louise – Miss Alice
Caro is pleased to be appearing at Patio Playhouse for her first time, even though she is an Escondidian!  Her career onstage began recently at the Avo Theater, where she was in "Fiddler on the Roof" and "the Women", and she was in "Harvey" at PowPAC.  Thank you, Mom, Clark, and Friends, for all your love and support.

Doug Van Solkema – Skeeter
Doug is delighted to be making his debut at Patio Playhouse. He has enjoyed meeting and working with the cast and crew. Though this is his first acting opportunity, he does have a passion for fishing (a passion shared with his character). Doug teaches Bible at Calvin Christian High School. His hobbies include traveling, hiking and photography

Michael Jones – Little Beebo/Innkeeper
This is Michael’s second Patio show. He recently appeared in Tricksters and Treats. Michael is in the seventh grade at Bear Valley Middle School. He enjoys music, drawing, writing and making videos.

Carri-Lyn Cameron – Mattie Sue
Carri-Lyn is having so much fun working on FrUiTcAkEs, her second show here at Patio Playhouse.  Her most recent Patio role was Molly in The Mousetrap. Some of her other favorite roles include Glinda the good witch, McCue in The Front Page, and of course herself in the stage rendition of Who’s Line.  Carri-Lyn is excited to have the opportunity to work with her little sister Gabriella, and would like to thank her family, especially Flower for all their love and support.

Matthew Read – Jamie
Matthew is 12 years old and in the 7 th grade at Valley Center Middle School, where he is both an accomplished athlete and scholar. His experience in the theater is at its beginning with this production of Fruitcakes. He is in his second year of Pop Warner football and has over eight years of little league baseball with his father as his coach that includes being an all-star player for several of those years. He is in drama at his school and enjoys extra-curricular activities such as helping to make the Halloween dance at school a success.

More recently he was seen in You Can’t Take It With You,Inspecting Carol ,Forum , Chicken Every Sunday, The Tempest, and The Mousetrap.

She earns her living as an Educator at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. She is also a voice over artist, and hers is the voice of the Balloon Safari at the Wild Animal Park. Peggy says Miss Sarah is lovingly based on her own 85 year old mother who insists on seeing and living life on her own, sometimes cantankerous, terms.
