"Set in a small Texas town in modern day U.S.A., Dyin'
concerns the reunion of a family gathered to await the
imminent death of their patriarch, who has recently suffered
a physically as well as mentally disabling stroke.
In essence,
however, it is not the story of the impending demise of the
father or of the drafting of his will, but a rebirth of the spirit of
the family unit. Without becoming ponderous, losing a sense of
humor or pandering to timeworn cliches about Texans or
Texas drawls, the story shares many elements of a good
summer novel. It's a fast, delicious, easy read with funny
moments, tense moments, touching moments, and characters
you care about." - The Hollywood Reporter
Characters:
NOTE: The ages here are suggested. Don't be dissuaded
if you are not an exact fit for the age listed. Combinations and
talent will be as important as "look" in the casting of the show.
SARA LEE TURNOVER, 36, the middle sister. Twenty pounds overweight, the town beautician, sports a bleached beehive.
Single and still lives at home. Strong-willed and has a wonderful sense of humor.
LURLENE TURNOVER ROGERS, 42, the oldest sister. A
preacher's wife and elementary school teacher. Attractive,
stylish, very Christian - but she has a bite.
MAMA WHEELIS, 80, the Turnover children's grandmother.
She's feisty, speaks her mind, and rules the household.
EVALITA TURNOVER, 35, the youngest sister. Six-times
married, loves to shock her family. She was a beauty - and still
is from a distance. Has a worn look about her. A wounded soul.
HARMONY RHODES, 36, Evalita's latest fiance. A musician
and a vegetarian. Attractive, tan, off-beat, long curly hair.
Looks like Jesus with earrings. Has a past. NOTE: Ability
to play guitar would be a bonus.
ORVILLE TURNOVER, 38, the brother. Fat, abusive,
unhappy and mean. A redneck trash collector.
BUFORD "DADDY" TURNOVER, 67, the father. A stroke
victim. Partially paralyzed on his left side, but can walk
with
a slight limp. Has occasional moments of coherency.
MARLENE TURNOVER, 36, Orville's wife. Temporarily
overweight. A constant victim of Orville's abuse. However,
losing sixty-two pounds can boost a girl's confidence.

Patio Playhouse Proudly Presents
The 2009 Winner
of the
Evelyn Spring Scholarship Award
--- Sanford Jackson ---
Sanford Jackson and Patio's Treasurer, Peggy Schneider
The purpose of the scholarship is to honor
Evelyn's work with the youth of Escondido
while supporting a stronger community and the arts.
This is done by providing financial support to encourage
an Escondido High School Senior who is able
to display a strong love of both the community and theater arts.
Sanford went to Orange Glen High School. His GPA was 4.1
He was an AP student. He has an impressive theater resume
including both school programs and programs with BTAA.
He does the schools daily news broadcast. He has done video
work
on both sides of the camera. He is attending UC Berkeley in
the fall,
majoring in Theater Arts. He has lettered in water polo
and received the school's 2008 most improved field event
for his improvement in pole vaulting. He has raised funds for the
Diabetes Research Foundation. He is politically involved.
He created a 30 second commercial for the Obama campaign
using his family members. His instructor, Katherine Dooley
describes the clip as clever, on point, and well edited.
His other recommendation from Jenner Veitch describes him
as a person who knows how to balance work and play,
focus on the task at hand, and make the experience
more enjoyable for all.
We are all very proud of Sanford and it is our pleasure to encourage
his dedication and hard work to make a difference
in his community.
